It Starts With Acknowledging There’s a Problem
Nearly four years ago we set out to find the world’s best fabrics, cut out the middleman and bring them directly to you for a fair price. Why? Because the best shouldn’t be exclusive. Today our mission is to still bring you the world’s finest fabrics and modern essentials at honest prices. However, as we grow, and explore more eco-friendly options, we’re learning that the world’s best fabrics, aren’t always the best for the world.
Making Changes
We’re adding more eco-friendly fabrics to our collections so we’re all able to shop consciously and incorporate soft eco-friendly fabrics into our essentials.
TENCEL® was created as an eco-friendly and cost efficient alternative to other popular fabrics. The fabric comes from timber; and not just any timber, but from wood pulp that’s harvested from sustainably managed forests. TENCEL® is also made using a closed loop manufacturing process; which means that 99.95% of the water and solvents used in production are reclaimed, recycled, and used again. TENCEL® is also fully biodegradable, more absorbent than cotton, softer than silk and cooler than linen.
Austrian Modal & Lenzing Modal® are the exact same fabric makeup however one is a brand name, we’re working with both for different styles. Modal is a cellulosic fibre made from the cellulose found in beech trees. The nice thing about modal is that it’s made only from sustainably harvested beech trees in PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) certified forests in Europe. The PEFC ensures that timber and non-timber forest products are produced with respect for the highest ecological, social and ethical standards.
French Linen is made from flax. Flax is a plant that grows naturally in cooler climate areas around the world. Normandy, France happens to grow some of the best. Since flax grows naturally it requires less water, energy and fewer pesticides than other natural fabrics. It’s gentle on the land and easy to incorporate into crop rotation. It’s also considered the strongest of natural fibres as it’s estimated to last up to three decades. However, when the time does come, it’s also recyclable and biodegradable.
We’re also looking into more sustainable ways we can work with some of our classic fabrics like denim, cotton and silk. We want our fabrics to consume less water, chemicals, and overall have more positive impacts on our environment.
Not Overnight
It’s important to understand that as a business, these are not changes we can make overnight. We must consider things like our contracts with our current mills, and orders that have been placed for coming seasons. And we have to take a good hard look at the cost of eco-friendly fabrics and see how they fit within our pricing scheme. However, every step forward towards sustainability is a step in the right direction.
We’re not there yet. And we know it.
It’s going to take a while before we get to where we want to be. That’s what it’s about, being responsible humans towards our only earth. Our mission is still the same: to bring you the world’s finest fabrics and modern essentials at honest prices. However, we’re taking a responsible look at what those fabrics are, and how they can have a more positive environmental impact.
